The Stadium's Final Night

Yankee Stadium hosted its final game this evening, and ... who cares who got the win. Tom Verducci's piece in this week's SI has a great overview of the house that Ruth built, and the players, pugilists, pine tar, presidents and popes who have shaped the history of this quintessentially American venue.

On 13 June 1948, an ailing Babe Ruth stood in the house that he built for the final time, on the day his number 3 was retired. Nat Fein stepped behind Mr. 714 and ended up with a Pulitzer Prize the following spring for his image entitled "The Babe Bows Out."

So, in honor of the Stadium's final bow, here is one of the most celebrated photographs from the 20th century... and to my mind the most recognizable sports photograph that exists.

An Officer and a Husband

One of the screens in my office has been tuned to the conventions over the past couple weeks, and after the boys were in bed I caught the intro to Senator McCain's address this evening.

There he was... BRAD! In 1993, Senator McCain handed out diplomas to the graduating class at the US Naval Academy, and a photograph of Brad Donnelly receiving his has been incorporated into the campaign.

The photograph with the Senator hangs on a wall in the Donnelly home, as does this image of Brad and Eileen as they were pronounced man and wife in New York Harbor in 2004.
